*and arrange for a settlement of the case as far as we are

"concerned by the merchants of our two nations. As to the *repeated calumnies and uncivilized behaviour of the "Portuguese Cons 1 we will join forces with the Society "in making a reply and obtaining justice".

The Society has borne in mind the friendly relations which have always existed between the merchants of China and Great Britain, and is convinced that the murder of a Chinese passenger by one of Yessrs Butterfield and Swires' Portuguese officers which aroused so much indignation caused great regret to all Pritish and Chinese merchants.

The letter which we have quoted above shows plainly enough how the Portuguese Noronha murdered the passenger but the friendly advances which Messrs Butterfield and Swire have made to us must be the subj ct of discussion in a public meeting.

itorial Note.

It is evident that the lives of Chinese are held at ten times cheaper a rate than those of Foreigners. When several years ago & Ningpo man Chou Sheng Yu was kicked to death by a Russian at Shanghai, $100,000 compensation was paid by the Russians. From this time the lives of Chinese came to be considered as equl in value to those of human beings. When however one or two German missionaries wore killed in Shantung, we lost Kiaochow together with all the mining rights of the Province. The difference secms consid-

erable!

i

nd Swire now desire to urchase Messrs Butterfield the live of one of our compatriots with a few thousand dollars. A country bred simpleton will no doubt start with amazement at such a sum, but I am afraid that the Chinese all over the world will not so easily abandon their case. Who is paying this money? Who is receiving it? We do not desire to become a laughing stock for foreigners.
